Sharon Quits Likud

Very interesting. As Homer Simpson wisely said, this is a "crisitunity."

I wonder how much backing Sharon has from the left now since his "conversion"?

That will probably inform how viable he is after he splits.

At least they have a system where it's possible to have multiparty rule. It's so disgraceful that we have to choose between two evils in most of our elections. I would much prefer to choose between four or five evils.

I think getting that backing is part of his move.

This could end up isolating the wacko-rightists. The danger is that Labor will join a non-wacko-rightist party that still continues the moronic policies of Sharon and even of previous Labor administrations -- i.e., destroying an area, walling it off, giving it back, maintaining every other aspect of sovereignty, and building up the West Bank.

However, I'll take a better shade of grey over a worse shade of grey.

Here are some interesting reactions.

If nothing else, this looks like an improvement so far. Shake it up -- isolate the wacko right-wing fundamentalists.

If Israel has been the future of the US in the recent past, can we expect a similar development here? (Of course, this is just newspaper-talk -- but I would love to see the sane Republicans leave the theocrats in the dust and join with the Democrats, at least in the upcoming elections -- they won't split up that party.)

As much as I hate Sharon, I do believe that he wants peace. All of his puffing and angry talk was designed to win over those to his right who were few but essential to his plans for peace. I am not sure this latest gambit will pay off, but it just might. If he can convince everyone that the number one priority is peace ASAP, and that he's the only one who can do it, I think he might just succeed.
