Odom: Want stability in the Middle East? Get out of Iraq!

Odom addresses point-by-point the issue of U.S. withdrawal from Iraq. For each argument forwarded for staying, he proves that the objectives cited are better served by withdrawing our troop. This is a must read in the wake of the Murtha debate. I have always argued that we can't just leave the Iraqi people to sort out a mess we have created, but I am starting to think otherwise now. In fact, I am pretty sure that our very presence makes it impossible for us to help the Iraqi people at all. The facts are the facts, and we have lost the war; it's time to win the peace.

Lieutenant General William E. Odom, U.S. Army (Ret.), is a Senior Fellow with Hudson Institute and a professor at Yale University. He was Director of the National Security Agency from 1985 to 1988. From 1981 to 1985, he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence, the Army's senior intelligence officer. From 1977 to 1981, he was Military Assistant to the President's Assistant for National Security Affairs, Zbigniew Brzezinski.

Wilkerson was on CNN's Late Edition today. I hope some of you got to see it. He was very well informed and right on target.

You are welcome. There will be plenty more I suspect, the rank and file in the services are very worried about the destruction of the institutions they have devoted their lives to creating. The armed forces have never been in worse shape.

The problem with this issue is that the administration has been unusually secretive about the war. As lower caste citizens, we don't have the information we need to make informed choices about how to continue, or even if we should continue, the war. However, I can read, and what I read in the global press indicates that the public in Iraq wants us gone in a hurry. There is little room for factual dispute on this point, it's a fact, they want us gone, period. Given this, all we can do is listen to military leaders who are not presently beholden to political interests (especially the Republicans). It's pretty clear that Odem, Wilkerson, and a whole slew of other generals are ape-shit over what this war is doing to our security. They Army is literally disintergrating because of enlistment troubles. I expect we will see some leaked Army Docs. in the near future supporting a Murtha like plan. Keep your eyes pealed.
