This is a good time to watch "the Battle of Algiers" and "Vietnam - a Television History" - by Stanley Karnow.

The administration knows that it can't win the war or the 2006 mid-term elections. To win the war, we would have to institute the draft - which would kill the Republican party's chances in 2006. To win the midterms, the Republicans have to get rid of the Iraq problem. That ain't gonna happen. The only political solution that might work would probably involve the creation of a new crisis that could distract the people long enough to get through the mid-terms. However, I can't imagine what form such a wag-the-dog might take. Iran ain't it.
