Peace Corps Shenanigans...

Nice. We knew the CIA worked with the Corps; now the Pentagon is using it as a recruitment tool.

Peace Corps volunteers are raising alarm bells about a legislation that allows the U.S. military to recruit young people by holding out the option of a two-year stint in the Peace Corps to fulfill part of the their service obligations. We speak with the National Peace Corps Association, a Washington Post reporter, the U.S. Military Recruiting Command, and a Peace Corps parent.

Doug,

There are very strict laws forbidding former or present CIA employees from being in the Peace Corps. In the 1960s, the CIA did try to place agents within the Peace Corps. Because of the problems this caused non-CIA Peace Corps volunteers, the Congress passed legislation that has prevented the CIA from using the Peace Corps as a cover. Every single Peace Corps volunteer has undergone an FBI background investigation. One of the first things the FBI does is to make sure you never worked for the agency. I am confident that this wall between the two agencies has been successfully maintained for nearly 40 years. In fact, I know of no recent instance where the CIA used opperatives within the Peace Corps.
