Paula Zahn asks, "Should we kill Hugo Chavez?"

I know it sounds unbelievable, but Paula Zahn actually asked if Pat Robertson should be assasinated (which of course is against the law). Zahn's program failed to counter Robertson's claim that Chavez was "spreading Islamic terror in South America," or even to point out that Chavez is, in fact, a Catholic. The report also failed to mention that unlike president Bush, Chavez is a democratically elected president. No mention was made either of the US backed attempted coup against Chavez.

Now I'm starting to take my earlier speculation more seriously -- this is a PR balloon to see what the US would think about killing this guy.

We are so uncivilized it's horrific. This guy has been democratically elected -- survived a US-complicit coup -- and a special recal vote (by a 2-to-1 margin). He may be a tad loopy re: Castro, but his real "sin" is that he basically tells the US to keep its fucking hands of his country's oil.

Sad.

Where's the Zahn link on Media Matters? I searched for Zahn and didn't find anything about Chavez.

Doug,

I didn't find the Freudian mistake . . . oh well. As for Zahn, I didn't link to her transcript. I put the mediamatters link so people could see what Robertson said. I was blogging while watching. Blogging allows me to remove some of the toxins that build up in my system from watching MSM. It's sort of like, "suck out da poison."

Paula Zahn's comment ".. is Pat Robertson on to something here?"

Balance strangles Objectivity. Again.

As Paul said,

"Balance strangles Objectivity. Again."

This is clearly the number one problem of our national media, and quite possibly the number one problem for our democracy.

The current "equal time" paradygm is a product of the Nixon administration. Nixon created "equal time" to combat what he said was "the liberal media." Oddly enough, objective coverage of the Vietnam war was an equally difficult problem for "liberal" LBJ. The "equal time" doctrine became law under Nixon and was mainly a response to coverage of Watergate. PBS responded by airing the Watergate hearings unedited, a la CSPAN.
