Another Interesting Experiment

OK, here goes: Write 3 things you don't like about your own ethnic group (define it however you like).

Here's mine (Eastern-European Jews who moved to America):

1. The use of the Holocaust as an argument-stopper any time Israel is brought up. Unfair, and rather silly. Related to hysterical cries of anti-Semitism every time someone says something not totally pro-Israeli (government; I make that distinciton between peoples/nations and governments all the time; wholly necessary! I don't believe in collective guilt.)

2. The reporting of the Holocaust as killing "the six million." A terrible way of putting it: 12 million people were killed; Jews were the primary victim, in propaganda, total numbers, and percentages (except perhaps for the Rom peoples, "Gypsies"), but they don't "own" the Holocaust. Why would they want to? Related to #1 above. Why remember "the six million" with a phrase that not only doubles the idea of racial difference which the Nazis believed, and which is totally false, but also in the very same phrase erase six million other deaths? Awful. Pet Peeve!

3. Related to #1, but specifically using the Holocaust to end discussion on the neoconservatives, many but not all of whom are Jewish, and all of whom are acting on some blinkered view of Israeli security. This should be debated -- and is in the Israeli press far more than ours.

4. Those sectors of rightwing Jewry who have allied here and abroad with fundamentalist Christians. Really a marriage of convenience, and playing with fire. It's pulled Judaism into even more fundamentalist positions -- not that there wasn't plenty of homegrown versions, but the alliance is not a good one.
