It would be a very interesting split in the Black community, among those who are either Catholic or care about Popes or both.

Would rock the world of the shaky GOP coalition, though...

I think it’s a mistake to assume that the ascension of a black Pope would be detrimental to the Republicans. It may have the opposite effect. As much of a prick Bush has been to left-leaning African-American organizations, and as harmful Republican policies have been for African Americans, and as profound as many Republicans’ racism may be, they have nevertheless tried very hard to tap the black constituency for a while now. A powerful black figurehead who preaches the “culture of life” and imposes the same policies as his papal predecessor (and, worse, who shamelessly alliterates!) may be just what the Big Doctor in the sky ordered for the Republicans. And as much as I’d like to see a black Pope, no Pope is always the better alternative so long as he continues to promulgate a culture of death.

You have a point, Greg. I think that the point is that this late pope (a mixed bag, at best) has stacked the College of Cardinals (and for all I know, given his focus on this issue, the St. Louis Cardinals) and the general Church hierarchy with as many traditionalist/rightwingers as possible. So, we'll likely have more of the same for our lifetimes from the Catholic Church. Tom Paine and Voltaire were right, man.
