New Director of National Intelligence

I'm awestruck. Of all the many things one could say, how the hell is the ambassador to Iraq -- no small job, I should think -- actually going to get anything done in either job if he's ALSO the DNI?

Dead nuns in Honduras aside, of course.

Doug,

I understand he's moving from Iraq to take the DNI job. They fished around trying to find someone who would accept the DNI job and settled on a political loyalist.

Good point; it's actually in the article I posted, which I obviously read too fast. Now we can discuss the 400 other reasons Negroponte is, as per usual, a terrible choice. Your reason is #1. :)

Doug,

A while back Robert or I posted an article about how the adminstration was contemplating an "El Salvidor Option" complete with death squads and warm relations with local business/mafia leaders. I just heard on Air America today that small local units are being created to fill exactly such a role. Naturally, Negroponte has the experience and moral flexiblity to run such a program. From Washington he'll be able to set up such programs around the globe.
