Mary Cheney: The Politics of Shame

Its so funny how the news cycle is now about Mary Cheney. I think KE04 can run some great jujitsu by continuing to keep their comments positive and then subtly asking the question "What are the Cheney's ashamed of?". Its clear that BC04 is reacting to this as if some dark secret is being dragged into the spotlight, but all the Dems have to do is say, "Look, we were complimenting you.. its not like your daughter has a disease!".

Update: Guess I spoke too soon, at least Elizabeth Edwards gets it (too bad she's only quoted in the Guardian).

"Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of vice presidential candidate John Edwards, said of Lynne Cheney in an interview Thursday with ABC Radio: ``She's overreacted to this and treated it as if it's shameful to have this discussion. I think that's a very sad state of affairs. ... I think that it indicates a certain degree of shame with respect to her daughter's sexual preferences. ... It makes me really sad that that's Lynne's response.'"

Paul,

I thought the same thing - good for Mrs. Edwards. Kerry should use this example, would the Cheney's be as upset if Kerry had used Chaney's daughters as an example of success in education? The answer is "no" because they would not be ashamed that their daughters were honor students but they are ashamed that their daughter is a dike.

What I find especially egregious is that 1) Mary Cheney is running Cheney's campaign. She's his #1 assistant 2) She's out and has worked in a number of positions because of her sexuality 3) when Alan Keyes called her a 'hedonist' there was no outcry whatsoever and 4) she was onstage WITH HER PARTNER after the veep debate.

So what are they so fucking surprised/angry about?
